Reading Buddies is a free program offered by the Louisville Public Library that pairs teenage volunteers with K-3rd grade students who are learning to read. They work together one-on-one for an hour every week. The program helps boost young readers' skills and make them excited about reading and the library. It gives Big Buddies community service hours and the chance to make a real difference in a child's life.
Reading Buddies was first offered at the Louisville Library in the summer of 2009, and has expanded since then to three sessions (two on Sundays and one on Mondays) and over 80 participants. The program at the Louisville Library is based on the similar program at the Lafayette Library - the Lafayette program generously allowed us to use their training materials and other information to start our program.
Applications are now available online and in the library for our summer Reading Buddies program, beginning this June 17th and continuing through July 29th. Download an application or pick one up at the library.
Kendall Saunders and Jessica Piper, participants in Reading Buddies since 2009, have volunteered to be our new program coordinators. We're still looking for Big Buddies who want leadership opportunities recruiting and training volunteers and running games and activities; if you're interested, let us know on the Returning Volunteer application.
